CIS Frequently Asked Questions

This page contains a list of questions that arise repeatedly in our department. The answers are provided either below or on a linked page. This page is under development.

  • How do I use the CIS departments UNIX machines?

See an introduction to the Computer Systems for the CIS department for a variety of questions concerning our UNIX systems. This guide is specifically for the systems at Lincoln Center, but most of the material applies equally well to Rose Hill. Issues covered include: logging in, access from the Internet, reading UNIX email and accessing the Lotus Notes server, backups and maintenance, and Unix text editors.

  • Do I have to have a CS or IS degree to be accepted to the MS program in Computer Science?

No, you don't have to have a Computer Science or Information Science degree, but you may have to take one or more transition courses to prepare you for the graduate program. You should contact the Department's Associate Chair for Graduate Studies and be prepared to discuss your undergraduate transcript and your work experience. Based on this discussion, the Associate Chair will be able to recommend transition courses for you to take and advise you on applying to the program.

  • How do I apply for to the MS Program in Computer Science?

The application forms for matriculated and non-matriculated admission are on the web page for the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (http://www.fordham.edu/gsas) and also at (http://www.fordham.edu/gsas/forms).
